$150,000 OTF Grant has given the Curling Club a real Lift

Bobcaygeon, ON: - On Sunday afternoon, the Bobcaygeon Curling Club welcomed its members, sponsors and the public to a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the new accessibility upgrades that have been made to the Club. Local MPP Laurie Scott and Les Kariunas, an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) volunteer, were on hand to congratulate the local group on the accessibility upgrades that have been done since the Club received a $150,000 OTF Capital grant earlier this year.

“Congratulations to the Bobcaygeon Curling Club for receiving a $150,000 capital grant to implement accessible upgrades and additions to their facility,” said MPP Scott. “These modifications support the members’ advocacy and devotion to remaining accessible to all ages and abilities.”

Thanks to Capital grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, over the last few months, the Club has installed an elevator in addition to making three of its washrooms fully accessible, ensuring that all three floors of the Curling Club are barrier-free for everyone. And the impact of this work isn’t limited to curlers’, it will have a positive effect on everyone using the building for their sports, events and meetings.

“The impact of this OTF grant cannot be underestimated,” said Doug Whalen, President of the Club. “This grant has enabled our Club to accommodate everyone with mobility issues and serve our community better.”

LAKE SIMCOE AREA MPS CALL ON PRIME MINISTER TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON CLEAN-UP FUND REINSTATEMENT

BEAVERTON: Local MP Jamie Schmale joined Lake Simcoe area MPs calling on the Prime Minister to follow through on Clean-Up Fund Reinstatement. Six area Conservative Members of Parliament are asking the new minority Liberal government to provide a firm commitment and timeline for reinstating the Lake Simcoe Clean-up Fund.

The original funding program assisted local groups with projects that improved the health of the lake for 10 years before it was cancelled by Trudeau’s government two years ago.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer announced in June as part of the Conservative Party’s “Real Plan for the Environment”, that an elected Conservative Government would re-instate the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund. Not to be out done, and with just two days left before voting in the recent federal election was set to begin, local Liberal Candidates with the help of Minister Chrystia Freeland promised that a re-elected Liberal government would also re-instate the Lake Simcoe Clean-Up Fund.

Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MP-elect Jamie Schmale, Barrie-Innisfil MP-elect John Brassard, York Simcoe MP-elect Scot Davidson, Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MP-elect Doug Shipley, Simcoe-North MP-elect Bruce Stanton, and Simcoe-Grey MP-elect Terry Dowdall all signed a letter this week to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. In it, they ask the PM to commit to reinstating the fund as soon as possible and to provide a date that funding will begin to flow.

“For the protection and long-term sustainability of Lake Simcoe and the surrounding areas, we want the Prime Minister to make good on his election promise and immediately give us a commitment to a date when the Lake Simcoe Clean-up Fund will be restored,” said Schmale. “Lake Simcoe is extremely important to Central Ontario and we need to make sure we are doing all we can to keep the lake healthy for future generations.”

The Lake Simcoe Clean-up Fund was implemented by the Conservatives in 2007 and for 10 years it worked to reduce phosphorus levels, restore fish habitats and improve shorelines and retention ponds.

Scientists found evidence the projects were working, as phosphorus levels were reduced, lake water quality improved and native fish species were breeding in the watershed – including fish that hadn’t done so in many years. The fund also helped improve shoreline naturalization and stormwater retention ponds.

“The increase in urban development, invasive species and other challenges have affected the health of the watershed over the years,” said Davidson. “We must work together to protect this important resource that so many of us rely on.”

This was accomplished in collaboration with stakeholders, municipalities, and conservation authorities.

Brassard delivered the letter to the Prime Minister’s office in Ottawa on Wednesday.

“Lake Simcoe needs our attention today,” Brassard said. “It’s been two years since the Liberal government cancelled the Lake Simcoe Clean-up Fund and we need to make sure that all of the work and resources that was invested over 10 years to improve the quality of the watershed is not wasted.”

2019 BUCKHORN HARVEST CRAFT SHOW

For the past 41 years the Buckhorn Harvest Craft Show has been presenting some of the best handcrafted products available and this year’s will not disappoint. The show takes place at the Buckhorn Community Centre Thanksgiving weekend, Oct. 12 - 14, 2019.   What started as a small show with approximately 22 vendors has grown into an acclaimed show with over 100 vendors.   It is recognized as the one craft show in the Kawarthas no one wants to miss!  The outstanding quality and variety of the items on display make a visit to it a must!  With only 10 weeks left until Christmas, the Harvest Craft Show is the place to start your Christmas shopping.   There will be many one of akind gifts for those people on your list, or maybe, a treat for yourself or home.  In these days of mass-produced items, it is a pleasure to be able to find something unique and handmade with love.

The Craft Show is pleased to welcome approximately 100 artisans from all areas of Ontario featuring the very best selection of Canadian handcrafted Seasonal, Country, Traditional and Contemporary Crafts.  Among the many items that will be on display are candles, pottery, leather goods, furniture, gourmet foods, Florals, wooden toys, children’s clothing, jewellery, designer clothing for the entire family, handmade soaps, hand painted glass and a wide variety of home décor items.  Also featured, will be items for seasonal decorating at Halloween or Christmas. 

The Craft Show is an annual fund raising event for the non-profit, non-funded Buckhorn Community Centre and is run by many Volunteers who build the exhibitor booths, man admission booths, park cars, and serve in the Snack Bar. 

The Buckhorn Harvest Craft Show is held at the Buckhorn Community Centre, on Lakehurst Road, in Buckhorn.  Buckhorn is located approximately 30 km. north of Peterborough.  Take Cty. Rd.  23 to Cty. Rd.  29 to Lakehurst Rd., the first road on your left over the Trent-Severn Canal and follow it approximately 2 km.

Show hours are Saturday, Oct. 12, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Monday, Oct. 14, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  General Admission is $5.00.  Children 12 and under – Free.

Your admission ticket gives you the opportunity to win a $100.00 Shopping Spree at the Buckhorn 2019 Spring Craft Show.  Make sure you place your ticket in one of the boxes at the show.  The entire show is fully accessible and there is ample free parking available.  A shuttle bus runs continuously from the upper parking lot to the show.   The entire show is under cover, so regardless of the weather, you can browse in comfort.    Refreshments are available.  A good time to visit would be while you and your guests are waiting for the turkey to cook!

Globus Theatre Launches Fall Season with A Weekend of Comedy

Bobcaygeon, September 10, 2019- Globus Theatre announces a packed Fall Season of comedy, mystery, and celebration! The season will run from September 27th - December 31st and includes A Weekend of Comedy this month as well as local favourites such as a festive murder mystery, annual panto, and New Years Eve bash to look forward to.

Globus Theatre loves a good laugh and will start the Fall Season off withA Weekend of Comedy! Award winning and internationally renowned sketch comedy group, The Lusty Mannequins will tour to Bobcaygeon on September 27th. The Lusty Mannequins are Ashley Comeau, Alastair Forbes, Karen Parker, and Connor Thompson - All alumni of the Second City Mainstage in Toronto and most recently winners with the ‘Best of the Fest’ from the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival.

On September 29th, stand-up and improv comedy group, Girls Nite Out, take the stage at Globus Theatre. Girls Nite Out is an all female, all funny stand-up and improv comedy ensemble featuring CBC darlings, Canadian Comedy Award Winners and Second City alum. The Girls Nite Out show originated at the Lakeview Arts Barn 12 years ago and has since toured across Canada to great acclaim. A fabulous opportunity to grab the girlfriends and come for a giggle!

Sandwiched between two evenings of comedy is a Quiz Night at the LAB on Saturday, September 28th! Tickets are $5.00 and sold at the door only. SCHMALE PLEASED WITH DECISION TO HELP CLOSE GAPS IN RURAL INTERNET AND CELLULAR BUT FRUSTRATED AT THE LENGTH OF TIME FOR ACTION

OTTAWA, ON – Local MP Jamie Schmale welcomes today’s announcement by the Government of Canada to contribute $71 million in funding to develop the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) mobile broadband project.

“I have been talking about the need to fill the gaps in internet and cellular coverage since being first elected in 2015 as people and businesses in rural communities struggle with reduced access to vital connectivity,” said Schmale. “While today’s announcement is a positive step forward, it also is met with frustration, as the government has had the EORN project application on their desk for over two years with little-to-no movement.”

“Despite what seemed like endless amounts of meetings to talk about this much needed investment, it appears that on the eve of an election, with sagging poll numbers and seats in Eastern Ontario in jeopardy, the government has finally decided to take action.”

Today’s announcement will support a Dual-Phase Project, which is mandated to first build 317 new telecommunications towers and an additional 32 local Internet access points to improve overall mobile coverage for residents of Eastern Ontario. The second phase will identify the capacity gaps that result from heavy user-traffic, upgrade equipment to reduce network overloads, and improve service quality in rural communities.

In addition to federal dollars, the Province of Ontario committed months ago $71 million and two years ago, the Eastern Ontario Wardens' Caucus earmarked $10 million towards the initiative, with private partners providing the rest of the funding.

“Residents and businesses in Eastern Ontario would benefit from improved access to online services which allow people to connect with friends, family, business, and community organizations. Most importantly, this proposal will save lives by ensuring cellular access to emergency services in remote areas and improving public safety by connecting all first responders on a dedicated network,” said Schmale.

Norm Foster’s Comedy Hits the Stage at Globus Theatre

Bobcaygeon, July, 2019- There’s nothing like a good fishing story…and this is a great one from audience favourite Norm Foster! The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby brings in a professional cast of actors who have all made Globus Theatre audiences laugh before and runs from July 17th - July 27th at the Lakeview Arts Barn in Bobcaygeon. A fish-out-of-water comedy complete with romance, broken hearts and small town hospitality will resonate with both local residents and summer visitors!

Ambitious investment banker James Bell is on his way to an important conference but instead finds himself stuck in the sleepy town of Kooshog Lake on the weekend of their annual fishing derby. The warm and welcoming locals invite him to join them in hooking the big prize …and a few of them see him as quite the catch!

Anna Silvija-Broks has been performing in Globus Theatre productions since the company opened its doors! For Globus’ sweet 16th season, Anna stars in The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby as Sienna, the general store owner who knows everyone in town. Artistic Producer of Globus Theatre, James Barrett, will play Kirk Douglas - no, not the film actor but the man responsible for starting the fishing derby in the first place. Tara Koehler, who our audiences will fondly remember from Sugar Road last year, comes back again to play Melanie Morningside. The role of James Bell, the city slicker we can all giggle at, will be performed by Canadian Comedy Award Winner, Connor Thompson. Artistic Director, Sarah Quick, has taken on directing the play and at the same time performs the hilarious Rhonda Borkowski, a small town girl with a huge personality!

Globus Theatre Opens Sweet 16th Season!

Bobcaygeon, June, 2019 - Globus Theatre opens its sweet 16th season of professional summer theatre this month including five fabulous shows that are guaranteed to get your toes tapping, heart aching and the laughter ensuing. The season opens on June 19th at the Lakeview Arts Barn in Bobcaygeon and the final show will close on August 24th.

Globus is delighted to have an all-Canadian season bookended by two World Premieres this year, in keeping with their mandate to foster new works. Kicking off the season is a clever Italian comedy from playwright Rose Napoli called That’s Amore! and rounding out our season is the newest comedy from Globus’ own Artistic Director, Sarah Quick, the raunchy and hilarious Kama Sutra. Globus Theatre is a proud recipient of the 50/50 Applause Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights for championing the works of female playwrights in an industry where they remain underrepresented - we are happy to continue this trend!

That’s Amore! (June 19-29) features Lynne Griffin as feisty Italian  grandmother, Katerina; Katherine Cappellacci as her independent and witty granddaughter, Carina; Marcus Haccius as Carina’s playfully stubborn love interest, Michael; and Linda Goranson as his peppy (and opinionated!!) grandmother.  Directed by Globus Theatre’s Artistic Director, James Barrett, the professional and charming cast will bring audiences a big fat Italian comedy about love and marriage and how the two might not be as simple as the moon hitting your eye like a big pizza pie.

More laughter is promised in July with romantic comedy, The Numbers Game (July 3-13) by John Spurway and The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby (July 17-27) by audience favourite, Norm Foster.

Thanks to funding from Celebrate Ontario we will be experimenting with a brand new cabaret-style set up for Leisa Way’s Opry Gold (July 30-Aug 10). Fans of the talented Leisa Way and her Wayward Wind Band will enjoy more interaction with this grand old opry setting and will walk away humming some of the best country classics!

The season’s final show, Kama Sutra, will run from August 14th until August 24th and will be performed by Globus Theatre’s James Barrett and Sarah Quick.
